Exploring Geek Culture with Shibuya PARCO’s 「Chaos Culture Geek」

Shibuya Parco Chaos Culture Geek

What does “geek culture” look like when you put it all under one roof?

Shibuya PARCO gave it a shot, and the answer spans everything from manga and video games to fashion, RC cars, art, trading cards, underground music, and more.

Originally created during ShibuyaPARCO’s renovation last year, CHAOS CULTUREGEEK is a subculture-focused floor designed as a kind of secret base for hobbies, fashion, and entertainment.

From August 7 to 11, PARCO expanded the concept into a five-day event that took over the entire building, bringing together a wide range of creators, brands, stores, and communities.

Our team stopped by to explore the different spaces and collaborations PARCO brought together for this one-off celebration of geek culture.

Shibuya PARCO has long functioned as a physical meeting point for high fashion, graphic art, street design, and pop culture. CHAOS CULTURE GEEK pushes that idea even further, creating a melting pot of niches that might normally exist in completely isolated worlds.

KODANSHA POP-UP SHOP

Located at the 1F entrance, the KODANSHA POP-UP SHOP hosts the Shibuya Spain-zaka Editorial Office (渋谷スペイン坂編集室), a joint project between legendary publisher Kodansha and PARCO featuring live manga submission reviews and public talk recordings. The wider project also connects to manga artist Minetaro Mochizuki, whose work was collaged by graphic designer Takuto Okamoto for the CHAOS CULTURE GEEK key visual, ahead of a Mochizuki exhibition planned for this winter.

If PARCO’s CHAOS CULTURE GEEK shows us one thing, it’s that subculture does not require a strict boundary line. You do not need a pass, specific uniform, or an official title to belong.

If you have ever looked at something obscure, complex, or overlooked, and decided to dive in without caring how far down the rabbit hole goes, you are already there.

That’s exactly why there is no need to decide where geek culture begins or ends. It’s endless in nature. If there is something that can make you lose yourself completely, then that alone is surely enough.
