For her upcoming exhibition 「Eating is Sexy」, Tokyo-based photographer Kiki Zou explores a world we’re all connected by: food. But in Kiki’s universe, it’s girls who take centre stage. We sat down with Kiki to understand what makes eating so sexy.

Why this concept of Eating Is Sexy, where did the idea come from?

My old roommate loved food, while I never thought much about it. Then some day she took me to a restaurant and showed me how to eat, how to savour a soup with its noodles, to pair each bite with a side dish. But actually, she was showing me herself. The way she ate, so freely and with such pleasure, transformed her: she became very attractive in my eyes. And ever since, I’ve been drawn to girls who love food.

What does “Sexy” mean to you in this context?

A girl enjoying her meal is relaxed. She allows herself to let go, become absorbed in an act; she becomes more free and alive. How else can I put it. Relaxed, in-the-moment, alive, feeling pleasure…

Eating is incredibly sexy!

Is eating one of the most honest things a person can do in front of someone else?

When they’re honest in doing it, yes. To answer the last question in another way: holding back isn’t sexy.

If someone looked through your own camera roll, how many photos of friends eating would they find?

Very few, actually. The idea comes from my private life, but the work has its own space. These photographs are made with intention, through conversation and observation. While I’m dining with friends, I just stay present rather than reach for my camera.

What’s your ultimate comfort food, the one that always hits right?

The aglio e olio with garlic bread my best friend makes. Saikou!
